SayIt: Windows Out of Memory

On a Windows computer, you can check to see if your system is running out of memory to cause latency, unresponsiveness, or a crash with SayIt.

Here's how:

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc keys to open the Windows Task Manager.
  2. Look at the top of the window to find Memory (Windows 10) to see how much memory is being used. Above 70% is high.
  3. If the memory percentage is high, click the Processes tab to see what programs are using high amounts of memory.
WinTaskManager_PhysicalMemoryYour Task Manager windows may look different.

  4. Click the Memory column to sort memory usage high to low.
    WinTaskManager_ProcessesSortMemory

  5. Shut down high memory programs one at a time. To avoid potential data loss, you should gracefully shut down applications which are using the most memory by going to each one individually and using proper shut down option for the application.
If you cannot gracefully shut down a particular application, follow the instructions below to shut down an application from the Task Manager:
  1. Click on the top memory using application in the list.
    WinTaskManager_ClickTopMemoryUsingApp

  2. Then click the End Process button.
    WinTaskManager_EndProcess

  1. See if responsiveness on SayIt improves.
    • If that DOES improve SayIt responsiveness, that application is the culprit of memory usage. You may need to either add more memory to the computer, or do not run that program while you are using SayIt.
    • If that does NOT improve responsiveness on SayIt, click on the next application in the list and repeat.
